Comprehensive and Collision: What Type of Motorcycle Insurance Do You Need This Summer?

Summer is peak riding season, and with more bikes on the road, having motorcycle insurance is crucial. Warmer weather means longer trips, more events and increased exposure to risks like accidents and theft.

How Is Comprehensive Coverage Different From Collision Coverage?

Comprehensive coverage may help pay for damages not caused by a crash, such as fire, theft and vandalism. Collision coverage may cover repairs or replacement if your motorcycle hits another vehicle or object, regardless of who is at fault.  If you lease or finance a motorcycle, your lienholder can require full coverage motorcycle insurance, including comprehensive and collision coverage.

What Types of Coverage Do I Need for Summer?

While comprehensive and collision coverage are common, other types of motorcycle insurance may also be beneficial during summer:

  • Liability coverage is required in most states. It may help pay for injuries or property damage you cause to others in an accident. It does not cover your own injuries or bike repairs.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may cover your expenses if you’re hit by an at-fault driver with little or no insurance. This may apply to medical bills, lost wages and sometimes property damage.
  • Roadside assistance coverage may help with towing, flat tires, fuel delivery or a dead battery. It can be helpful for summer road trips and remote rides.
  • Accessory coverage may cover upgrades to your bike, such as custom seats, chrome parts and saddlebags. Standard policies usually don’t cover aftermarket parts.
